RIPPLE USD HAS GROWN MORE THAN 80% IN 2026 – AND ITS EXPANSION COULD MATTER FOR THE XRP LEDGER
RLUSD APPROACHES THE $2.5 BILLION MILESTONE
Ripple USD (RLUSD) is approaching another significant milestone. As of September 28, 2026, the stablecoin’s circulating supply has reached approximately $2.49 billion, compared with around $1.34 billion at the beginning of the year. That represents growth of roughly 86% in 2026.
The expansion places RLUSD increasingly among the larger US dollar-backed stablecoins. According to current market data, its circulating supply is now approaching that of PayPal’s PYUSD, highlighting how quickly Ripple’s stablecoin has expanded since its launch.
For the broader Ripple ecosystem, however, the important question is not simply how large RLUSD becomes. What matters is where the stablecoin is being used, how much liquidity it attracts and whether that liquidity translates into real financial activity across Ripple’s infrastructure and the XRP Ledger.
For a broader overview of how RLUSD, tokenization, institutional finance and XRP Ledger infrastructure fit together in 2026, see our XRP Ledger Institutional Finance Map 2026.
WHY RLUSD’S GROWTH MATTERS
Stablecoins have become an important part of digital financial infrastructure because they combine blockchain-based settlement with a value designed to remain close to a traditional currency.
For Ripple, RLUSD adds a US dollar-denominated asset to an ecosystem that already includes XRP, the XRP Ledger and Ripple’s payment infrastructure. This creates potential use cases in areas such as cross-border payments, liquidity management, settlement and institutional digital-asset activity.
RLUSD and XRP do not perform the same function. RLUSD is designed to maintain a stable value of approximately one US dollar, while XRP is a freely traded digital asset that can potentially serve as a bridge between different currencies and assets.
The continued expansion of RLUSD therefore raises an important question for the XRP ecosystem: Could growing stablecoin liquidity ultimately increase activity and utility across the XRP Ledger rather than compete with XRP?
RLUSD, XRP AND THE XRP LEDGER
RLUSD can operate alongside XRP within the broader Ripple ecosystem. While XRP provides a native digital asset for the XRP Ledger, RLUSD introduces a dollar-denominated asset designed for users and institutions that require greater price stability.
This combination could become particularly relevant for payments, decentralized trading, tokenized assets and liquidity management. A stablecoin can provide predictable dollar value, while XRP can potentially provide liquidity and connectivity between different assets and markets.
The key metric to watch is therefore not RLUSD’s market capitalization alone. More important will be how much RLUSD activity takes place on the XRP Ledger, how deeply it becomes integrated into financial applications and whether its liquidity contributes to increased use of the network.
In that sense, the growth of RLUSD could become an important test of a broader idea: whether the XRP Ledger can evolve from an infrastructure primarily associated with XRP into a multi-asset financial network supporting stablecoins, tokenized assets and institutional applications.
COULD RLUSD STRENGTHEN XRP RATHER THAN REPLACE IT?
The rise of RLUSD has sometimes led to questions about whether Ripple’s stablecoin could reduce the need for XRP. That comparison overlooks the fact that the two assets are designed for different purposes.
RLUSD provides price stability, while XRP remains a freely traded digital asset that can potentially be used for liquidity and as a bridge between different currencies and assets. In a financial infrastructure containing multiple currencies, stablecoins and tokenized assets, these functions could potentially complement one another.
What matters will be real-world usage. If RLUSD attracts additional institutions, payment flows and liquidity into Ripple’s ecosystem, that activity could also increase demand for infrastructure built around the XRP Ledger.
However, growth in RLUSD should not automatically be interpreted as growth in XRP adoption. The relationship will depend on how RLUSD is used, which networks carry its transactions and whether XRP plays a role in the associated liquidity flows.
For long-term observers of Ripple and XRP, this distinction will be important as RLUSD continues to expand.
THE BIGGER PICTURE FOR RIPPLE AND DIGITAL FINANCE
RLUSD’s rapid growth is significant because Ripple is no longer focused solely on XRP or cross-border payments. Its broader strategy increasingly touches stablecoins, custody, tokenization, institutional infrastructure and blockchain-based financial services.
A larger RLUSD ecosystem could give Ripple another way to connect traditional dollar-based finance with blockchain infrastructure. For the XRP Ledger, the long-term opportunity lies in becoming a network where different forms of value – XRP, stablecoins and tokenized assets – can interact.
But circulating supply alone does not prove adoption. The metrics worth watching are transaction activity, payment volume, liquidity, institutional integrations and the distribution of RLUSD across different blockchain networks.
If those indicators continue to expand alongside supply, RLUSD’s growth could become more than a stablecoin market-cap story. It could provide evidence of whether Ripple’s broader digital-finance strategy is gaining meaningful real-world traction.
For XRP holders, that distinction matters. The long-term question is not simply whether RLUSD reaches $2.5 billion, $5 billion or more – but whether its growth creates additional utility, liquidity and activity within the ecosystem surrounding XRP and the XRP Ledger.
WANT TO UNDERSTAND HOW RLUSD FITS INTO THE XRP ECOSYSTEM?
Stablecoins, tokenization, liquidity and institutional finance are becoming increasingly important parts of the broader Ripple ecosystem. Understanding RLUSD therefore also means understanding how Ripple, XRP and the XRP Ledger could interact within a changing global financial system.
